What is sexual sadism?

Sexual sadism is a psychological disorder in which an individual derives sexual pleasure from inflicting pain, humiliation, or suffering onto another person. People who engage in sadistic behavior may be aroused by the physical or emotional suffering of their partner, and may engage in behaviors such as dominating, controlling, and hurting their partner during sexual activities.

It is important to note that not all individuals who engage in sadistic behavior have a diagnosable mental health disorder. Some individuals may engage in consensual BDSM (bondage, dominance, sadism, and masochism) activities which involve the same elements of control, domination, and pain, but are conducted in a safe, consensual, and mutually satisfying manner.

However, sexual sadism becomes a mental health concern when it involves non-consensual acts of violence or harm. This behavior can have serious consequences for both the individual engaging in sadistic behavior and their victims, and can lead to legal consequences, relationship issues, and long-term psychological damage.

Treatment for sexual sadism may involve therapy, counseling, and medication, as well as addressing any underlying mental health issues or trauma that may be contributing to the sadistic behavior. It is important for individuals who are experiencing distress related to sexual sadism to seek help from a qualified mental health professional.
